Our story begins in a small town in Montana on a street called Freeland Road during a cold autumn day. On this road there was a little boy 9 years old by the name of Matt Hungerford. Young Matt was just about to undertake what no one in his neighborhood had done before. He was going to drive a go-kart down the street.
“You have to ease on the brakes once you get to the neighbor’s trash cans,” his grandpa said. Freeland Road happened to be a cul-de-sac which had a lot of houses and trash cans, which meant if Matt did not hit the brakes of the go-kart in time, he was going to become flat as a pancake. The go-kart was gas powered, which meant that it was going to be very speedy.
The go-kart was painted with line-x, which was a bed liner for trucks and cars, but Matt’s dad had an old line-x machine which he used on the go-kart because he knew if he didn’t, Matt would dent it. Matt wheeled the go-kart out of his garage and his grandpa Jonathan yanked the choke chord for the motor. The motor sputtered and died. Jonathan yanked the choke chord again, and this time it started.
Matt yelled “Yay!” and Jonathan grabbed his gas powered scooter. But as Matt was getting into the go-kart and was lining up at the end of the street, he was very nervous about wrecking it. Jonathan noticed Matt’s nervous expression and said
“What’s wrong Matt?” Matt spoke “I am very nervous about wrecking my go-kart.”
“Matt, it’s going to be ok. If you break it, your dad and i can always repair it,” Jonathan said.
So they lined up at the starting line, which was the beginning of the cul-de-sac, and Jonathan exclaimed, “Ready, set, GO!” They took off down the middle of the cul-de-sac. When they reached the middle of it, Matt was not paying attention and nearly hit the tree in the center of the cul-de-sac. He missed the tree, but he ran into the neighbor’s trash can and scraped his knee. He hit the brakes after he hit the garbage can. He cried very loud. Jonathan heard him crying and stopped his scooter. He helped him up from the go-kart and took him into the house.
Once there, Jonathan used medical liquid on Matt’s knee and pronounced “Matt, do you want to go back out?”
Matt uttered, “I do.” So Matt and Jonathan went back outside and lined up again. Jonathan said
“Ready, set, GO!” Both go-kart and scooter launched off the starting line like bullets. When they came to the middle of the cul-de-sac, Matt saw the tree coming and hit the brakes. Jonathan came up shortly behind him. The two of them laughed and went inside to make cocoa.
