“Voice”
by Emma Shaffer
We mustn’t be too happy,
We mustn’t be too sad
We mustn’t be unique, because that would be bad
This is a children’s rhyme
You may think it not true,
But did you ever think this idea is inside of you
Agony, frustration, and rage must be concealed,
For we have wounds that will never be healed
Happiness, joy, and delight are feelings felt in spite,
In spite of your joy, you are vain
Emotions are held inside,
For you are a shape society has made
you are not yourself, but a person with scars
Literal or metaphorical, it doesn’t matter
For we all have graveyards
Of dead hopes and dreams
For we all have red eyes
From tears wept in rage
For we all have broken vocal chords
From our voices that have been silenced
For we all live a lie
A lie that we have a voice
We mustn’t be too happy,
We mustn’t be too sad
We mustn’t be unique, because that would be bad
